Solid Wood Flooring

Solid hardwood floors are just that, they are the genuine article, made from 100% natural solid wood. Each board of solid hardwood flooring is made from a single piece of hardwood that’s about 18 – 25mm thick solid wood. Due to the thickness of the solid wood floor it can be sanded down and refinished or refurbished for however long the flooring is in the house.

The style of solid wood flooring can vary from flat-sawn, which is the most recognised style with a triangular grain, to rift-sawn where the material is divided up into quarters, then flat-sawn, which gives a finish where the grain is horizontal. After the cutting process is complete, the material is put into a kiln for drying and then finished. Solid wood flooring is seen as a great way to give your home or office a warm, rustic and natural feel.

Solid wood flooring is permanently nailed to the subfloor with a gap between the wall and the floor to accommodate swelling, thermal expansion and contraction. Solid wood flooring is a timeless option that should only be installed in parts of the home above grade and only over plywood, wood or oriented strand board subfloors.

Solid hardwood floors provide performance and durability that lasts a lifetime, with a vast range of finishes, colours and woods.

In very general terms when you buy a wooden floor, you can expect a life expectancy of between 5 – 100 years, with a solid wood floor lasting for up to 75 years.
